Toledo Part II
Here is a quick update with a few more photos from Toledo. We summed it up pretty good in the previous post about what we did, but here are a few photos from the ride around the city. The train station in town is very impressive. All of its windows are stained glass and much of the inside is decorated with detailed colorful tiles and woodwork. We are currently in Granada and the last photo of this post is from the train ride from Madrid to Granada. Time provided I will be posting a blog update about Granada in the next day or two.
An update on the health of the family. Steve and Jon are both getting better with antibiotics. The girls in the family think that they might be catching it too but only time will tell. Right now we are all trying to get lots of sleep in between sights.
San Isidro festival and Toledo
On Saturday we went to the San Isidro festival in Madrid. San Isidro is the city’s patron saint so they have special activities and most of the city shuts down for the day. We went to the park and walked around with thousands of other people, taking in the sights of the vendors and people in traditional costumes. It was similar to a fair. There were many different stalls with traditional foods as well. It reminded us of Czech days in Wilbur, NE, but much bigger.
Then that night we walked up to the Gran Via (a large street with lots of retail shopping and businesses, kind of like Michigan Avenue). That night it was a celebration of its 100 years. We lucked in to being in exactly the right place to watch a ten minute long light show that was projected on the large Telefonica building. It detailed the history of the Gran Via and the Telefonica building. Jon got video of the entire thing and will post it here when we get back home.
Toledo
Jon came to Toledo in high school as part of a short foreign exchange program during spring break in 2006. He stayed with the Canto family while he was in the city and we had plans to meet them once again for a night of Tapas. However, Steve has been sick most of the trip and had been getting worse. It is not possible to find a clinic here and you must go to the hospital if you want medical care on the weekends. Julia and her family met Steve and Jon at the hospital. Julia acted as translator for the doctors, who did not speak any English. He has a massive infection, and they even called in an ear specialist. Julia says they called him “pobrecito” and said he must have been in quite a lot of pain. They gave him a prescription for pain killers and antibiotics. The night with the Cantos was able to continue as planned, and we hope they are able to come to Nebraska some day. They were invaluable at the hospital and treated us to wonderful local tapas, wine, and great company.
This morning Jon woke up feeling sick as well. However, when we went to the pharmacy they were willing to give us as many antibiotics as we wanted. The price for them was also extremely low; the pharmacist said that many people from the United States come and ask for 15, 20 boxes so they can stock up.
We went to the Cathedral and Toledo and also took a little tourist train ride around the city to get better views of the surrounding countryside. It has all been very beautiful.

Madrid – Atlético de Madrid Championship Celebration!
Today we traveled from Barcelona to Madrid via high speed train, it was a nice ride. Speeds reached 300kmh and it was very quiet and smooth the entire way. It’s a nice way to travel.
When we reached Madrid we happened to get a very talkative taxi driver who told us all about the celebration that was happening near our hotel this evening. The Atlético de Madrid futbol team was celebrating its championship in a large parade through town. Our hotel is right on the puerta de sol which happened to be the ending point for the parade. The players got off the bus and went up into a government building to show off the trophies to the crowd. It was really a cool experience. Everyone was singing the team song, cheering, etc. It reminded me of a Husker football game day back home.
The weather here is cold right now. Today it was about 50F with short bursts of rain and even a little hail. Hopefully tomorrow will be warmer with more sun. We also found our favorite European ice cream bars the “Magnum Bars”, they bring back great memories. I wish that you could get them in the USA.
Today I took a lot of video with the new camera which increased the file count and spaced used for today only to 185 files at 9.26GB for a total of 518 files at 14.9GB. WOW!
Family Inc.: The New B-School Job Choice (BusinessWeek)
Two weeks ago I was given an amazing opportunity to be interviewed for an article focusing on college students and the family business. Last week Alison Damast conducted a 20 minute interview over the phone for the article. We talked at length about what I am learning in the class, the current job situation for soon to be graduates, and family businesses.
Overall I am very pleased with this article. I thought it represents myself, the family business, and the University of Nebraska in a positive manner. I hope that this article helps persuade the University of Nebraska to give this class I am currently taking MNGT 322 permanent funding. There are a lot of kids who have personal ties to a family business and the normal curriculum of the College of Business Administration does not talk about the uniqueness and the potential challenges in family businesses. I did think the stock Getty image used in the article was kind of funny though.

Website Update
Just a quick update about the website. I recently changed hosts and am in the process of changing the site around. Two major changes have already happened. I changed the design of the main page here and made it the homepage of the domain. Splash pages are so year 2000. As a result of this the link to the lightshow page is gone. I plan on implementing some type of permanent link in the header of this site to the page but until then here is a standard link. http://www.liquidretro.net/lightshow/
The other big change is that I will have to redo all the photos on the blog here. Because of how the photos were coded in the pages when I switched directories the links are no longer valid. I may end up with a quick fix for this or I might just do it the right way. Everything should work by the end of this weekend I hope.
Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting 2009
This weekend I attended the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting in Omaha, NE. This was the largest Berkshire Hathaway meeting ever with over 35,000 people attending. This was a surprise to me because of the recession and the stock has posted its worst year ever. Despite this it was a big and busy meeting. The company movie this year was better than previous years even though it was scaled back. The company movie contains many commercials from the many companies the Berkshire owns of owns controlling stakes in. It also contained funny things about the general economic situation as well as guest appearances by celebrities. This year it was Tiger Woods with Warren Buffet as his caddie.
The format of the Q&A section after the company movie changed and was much improved. In the past all of the questions came from the audiences and many of the topics stayed away from the business of Berkshire and instead moved to other topics, it also included protesters which was quite annoying from a shareholder perspective. This year however shareholders were asked to submit questions to 3 preselected journalists who then choose the best questions to ask. This was augmented with live questions from the shareholders in attendance. This format worked much better and kept the meeting mostly on the topic of Berkshire and the general economy.
It was this Q&A section that I found the most interesting. Being a college student in the business school and being interested in Finance, and the markets I found one question more interesting than others. That question I found most interesting were the questions about the use of higher mathematics and modern portfolio theory. Both Buffet and Munger were in agreement that students and investors should stay away from theories requiring computers and calculators. The Wall Street Journal had an excellent article on this and the following quotes below are from this article http://blogs.wsj.com/marketbeat/2009/05/02/buffett-and-munger-stay-away-from-complex-math-theories/
Mr. Buffett: “There is so much that’s false and nutty in modern investing practice and modern investment banking, that if you just reduced the nonsense, that’s a goal you should reasonably hope for.â€
Mr. Buffett on the efficient market hypothesis, the idea that all information is instantly priced into the market: “There’s this holy writ, the efficient market theory. How do you teach your students everything is priced properly? What do you do for the rest of the hour?â€
Mr. Buffett on the use of higher-order math in finance: “The more symbols they could work into their writing the more they were revered.â€
Mr. Munger on the same theme: “Some of the worst business decisions I’ve ever seen are those with future projections and discounts back. It seems like the higher mathematics with more false precision should help you but it doesn’t. They teach that in business schools because, well, they’ve got to do something. â€
Mr. Buffett adds: “If you stand up in front of a business class and say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, you won’t get tenure…. Higher mathematics my be dangerous and lead you down pathways that are better left untrod.â€
Mr. Buffett on the persistence of bad ideas in finance: “The famous physicist Max Planck was talking about the resistance of the human mind, even the bright human mind, to new ideas…. And he said science advances one funeral at a time, and I think there’s a lot of truth to that and it’s certainly been true in finance.â€
To me this is all very interesting because much of this efficient market hypothesis and how to build a portfolio is what I have been learning this semester in my finance classes. It contains a lot of math (Which I don’t like, or understand many times) the formulas are complicated and most of all many of them rely on discounting and future projections. Mr Munger’s quote here I think is right on and seems right to me. I just wish that the end of the semester was in a few weeks. I think we could have a great time discussing a lot of these ideas in my financial investment class.
It seems as though the hedge funds that have tried this “fancy math†theory have failed time and time again. One that we just learned about in class was LTCM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-Term_Capital_Management) which worked good when the market was “normal†but failed hugely when the market was not normal. If history and the past few months show us anything is that the market is not normal and these practices cannot be relied upon 100%. Instead Buffets practice of buying undervalued businesses that are well run and managed.
In the end I think its interesting that the Oracle of Omaha basically thinks that a majority of what I have been learning in Business School is crap, and just time filler. The entire thing just makes me really take a step back and look at what I have “learned†this semester and wonder about graduation next year and what I will be doing after.

Mini3 Headphone Amp Build
This past week I built an AMB labs Mini3 headphone amplifier for my Sennheiser HD595 headphones. The amp is still burning in but so far I am very impressed. It really helps when playing audio through my computer and especially through my iPod. The build was very fun. I soldered my first surface mount components. I also built it first time around correctly with no problems. The case is also great. So far I am very impressed. Here are some pictures of the finished project.
